Room 9 Communication Twins

In Room 9 we were also focussing on our Inquiry topic of Communication and have been practicing how to communicate clearly with each other.

We had a go at sitting back to back with a buddy and giving them instructions to follow. We called this Communication Twins.

We used coloured rods and simple pictures which one person described to their buddy. The buddy then had to follow the instructions on how to create the same image without seeing it.

Check out how we got on....

When we had compared images we had a chat about whether our communication was clear enough and also how we could improve.

It was lots of fun!

Communicating using Sign Language

We have been learning how to sign the first letters of our name.

Look at how we sign it.

Can you sign the first letter of your name too?

Writing a Postcard

As part of our Inquiry we decided to write a postcard to a friend.

Our postcards are handing in our classroom so we can read them.

Did you know that writing is a way of communicating with other people?

You could send a postcard or a letter to a friend to communicate with them too.

Communication - We can communicate by talking

We talked to a friend. Miss Moa took our photos and added speech bubbles with what we said to each other.

What would you say to your friend if you were talking to each other?

Communication

We have been learning about communication.

Talking is a kind of communication.

We made some megaphones with Miss Moa.

We walked out to the field to see if Mrs Burge could hear us talking using our megaphones from the other side of the field.

Did you hear us???

We all gave Mrs Burge a message from the other side of the field. She thought we said "You are a unicorn" but when we said it again she realised we were saying "You are beautiful."
Ha ha ha ha ha!

Lilly has been investigating Communication

After our discussions and research, we decided to practice our sign language alphabet and the paradise song which Lilly has really enjoyed doing since seeing it in assembly.

We also made our own telephone out of coffee cups and string and had some funny chats from different rooms of the house.

Imagine what Lockdown would be like if we didn't have the technology we have nowadays to communicate with each other???

Past, Present and Future

Our Inquiry Unit is called Past, Present and Future. As part of this, we are looking at Communication and how we communicated over time.

Mrs Harding brought in some old phones she had at home.

She brought in a very old telephone that you have to turn a dial to ring the number you would like.

Mrs Harding dialled the number and Daniel had a chat on the phone.

Mrs Harding also brought in her tiny little old Nokia phone which had buttons you had to press to dial. You could only call or text on this phone....no internet!

Mrs Harding also had a pebble phone that flipped open to show us.

There were walkie talkies too that people could use to talk to each other from far away.
Tohu and Mrs Harding had a chat together!

Ask your grandparents how they communicated with whanau when they were young and see if it has changed compared to now.

Germs!

On Wednesday Mrs Harding taught us about germs and how they get into our bodies...

We did an experiement using water, glitter and soap...

We used the glitter to act as the germs in water.
When we put our finger in the water the glitter stuck to our finger!!

When we put soap on our finger and tried again look what happens to the glitter!!! (germs)

We are learning how important it is to keep clean and wash our hands regularly.
