Fractions

We have been learning about fractions.

Mrs Harding taught us how to share a pizza or a doughnut between 2 people so we got 1/2 each, or between 4 people so we got 1/4 each.

On Friday, Mrs Burge brought apples into school. First, we talked about the whole apple.

Mrs Burge cut the apple into two equal pieces which made halves.

1/2 means one of two equal-sized pieces that make the whole.

Mrs Burge then cut the apple into 4 equal-sized pieces which made quarters.

1/4 means one of four equal-sized pieces that make the whole.

We got to eat one 1/4 at a time.
Some of us ate one quarter, some of us ate a half, some of us ate three quarters and some of us ate a whole apple!
What a delicious way to learn!

  1. See how important maths is Room 9. We use it all the time. Here it helps us share out the food evenly.
